Review ~ First Boy by Dennis Sharpe

Dennis Sharpe
First Boy
Short horror story

BLURB:
Forrest County Sherriff’s Deputy Matthew Burroughs is having a bad day. First there was the cold winter weather, then a car accident on an icy bridge, and finally a routine stop to investigate a claim of neglected children. At an abandoned farm house in the middle of nowhere he finds a little girl and boy, and ends up dealing with far more than he ever expected.

REVIEW:
For only 25 pages, it’s surprising how much the author has been able to fit into this story.  It’s a quick read but that didn’t take anything away from the story and it felt like it was much longer.  I never saw the end coming, even with the story one of the children was telling Matthew, and loved the twist.  I’m sure if I read it again I would notice much more, and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

Author Bio

I like to think of myself as a beautiful conundrum. When I am not writing, I can be found surrounded by my amazing family and 4 dogs or working as a Procurement Specialist for a construction company. I love who I am and don’t mind at all when I get strange looks from people. I am a tattoo covered, child and animal lover who looks forward to destroying peoples preconceived notions of what “someone like me” would be interested in. You only live life once… you may as well make it interesting.

I love to get lost in a good book and hope that everyone will get lost in mine.

REVIEW: B.T. Lyons
Heartkeeper
Heartkeeper Saga #1

To say this book is different would be an understatement. It has an innocent feel about it and could be enjoyed by any age. I loved the concept of the book, and happily read it in one sitting, but was then left wanting more. The author managed to create a future world so vividly, I was easily able to imagine the whole story with the descriptive nature used. Definitely a story that won’t be forgotten.

Blurb:

“This is a story about survival.
Letting go and learning to let in.
Getting along and moving on.
There’s no make-pretend or fairytales.
This is a story about the truth of life.
The things left unsaid…”

It’s been four years since that night at the river. That night on the alabaster hill where Trinity Ayala swore on her soul that she’d fallen in love with a heart-breaker, willingly.

2 months, 7 weeks, and 1,460 long days. They were carefree—limitless and infamous, he’d told her.

But after the accident that nearly cost her everything and her father called it quits and ditched, Trinity vowed to make something of herself and someday leave town with hopes of becoming a writer.

Four years is a lot of time. Enough time to forget Elijah Marciano and move on from her life on the streets. But when she runs into the hazel-eyed dare devil from her childhood at a fraternity party, one drunken night of passion lands her back in his clutches. And he’ll do anything to keep her there, even if it means turning her away from her fiancé and the mirage of a life she’s built to forget her past. Trinity soon finds herself shrouded in a world of heartbreak, betrayal, and one ugly affair with no way out.

Only, Eli—once the troubled kid from apartment 309—has a few secrets of his own. Secrets he’s kept hidden for months, and Trinity is no better. When they discover just how deep the lies run, vows are broken and, in the end, hidden truths are bared to the open.

Their love will be INFAMOUS.

EXCERPT
Eli liked things he could control, I knew, and where feelings were involved, his control wasn’t. So instead he hid from the things that’d make him regret or forget.

The things that would give him any reason to doubt or give up. And who the hell was I to tell him he was wrong?

I was nobody.

The things that could be controlled, though, was this moment. And Elijah kissed me like it was a natural-born instinct. We had our story and they had theirs. No, ours wasn’t exactly beautiful or magical, or any of those things they made us believe in. More often than not, we cried and were reckless with every decision. Those feelings we held onto in that moment were ever-changing; we did the impossible and never doubted for a second that we’d do it again. Because in our story there were no rules to hold us back or people to judge and misuse us. We were limitless.

By Peggy Martinez
Available on Amazon:
Available on B&N:

When Beth Michaels high tailed it out of the hole-in-the-road town she grew up in, she only had two goals. One—get as far away as quickly as possible, and two—never set foot in her parent’s home again. But when she receives a heart breaking call from her childhood best friend, Jen, she has no choice but to turn her ’56 Ford pickup back in the direction of Salem, Missouri to attend a funeral.
There’s a new local in town when Beth arrives, and suddenly, it ain’t all that easy for her to remember her rules for dating. #1. Cookie-cutter-perfect guys ain’t her type. #2. Tie wearin’ and church frequentin’ is an automatic dismissal. #3. Most importantly, never date anyone from small minded, conservative, Bible-thumping towns like Salem. Unfortunately, Matthew Wright breaks all her rules and then some.
Matt might be from a small town and have small town values, but that doesn’t mean he fits into a little slot of Beth’s preconceived notions. After all, ever so often good guys are good. Now if he could just convince Beth to let go of her past and give him a chance, he’s pretty sure there’s a whole lotta sweet under that prickly exterior. His own … Sweet Contradiction.
